Biography

Named in honor of an Andalucian anarchist group, Mano Negra emerged from the same Parisian artists' scene which also gave rise to the like-minded Les Negresses Vertes, drawing equal influence from the punk ethos of the Clash and the multitude of sounds and rhythms endemic to the global music community. Formed in 1986 from the remnants of the neo-rockabilly unit the Hot Pants, Mano Negra essentially consisted of vocalist Manu Chao, his trumpeter brother Tonio and drummer cousin Santiago Casiriego, Spanish natives who fused rock, rap, flamenco and rai to create a heady brew they dubbed "Patchanka," a name derived from a Spanish pejorative for dancehall music. Mano Negra's debut LP, also titled Patchanka, appeared in 1988, scoring the French indie hit "Mala Vida."

The record's success led to a contract with Virgin, which in 1989 issued the group's sophomore effort Puta's Fever (Dominican slang for a sexually-transmitted disease caught from a prostitute), increasing the band's visibility abroad as well as establishing them as France's most popular alternative act. While 1991's King of Bongo attempted to broaden their Anglo fanbase via the inclusion of several English-language tracks, but their focus quickly turned to South America when in 1992 they embarked on the "Cargo Tour," travelling to a series of port cities to perform on a stage built into their ship's hold. Mano Negra returned the following year, this time journeying by rail from Colombia's Caribbean coast to the capital city of Bogotá, giving free concerts at stations en route. Latin influences dominated 1994's Casa Babylon, which proved to be the group's final record; Manu Chao later resurfaced in Radio Bemba, and released his first solo album (Clandestino) in 1998. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide

Mano Negra was a multiracial music french band fronted by Manu Chao. The band was founded in 1987 by Manu, his brother Antoine, and his cousin Santiago Casariego in Paris, France. the band was very influent in Europe during the early 90's reaching mainstream in several countries including Netherlands, Germany, and Italy, afterwards the band tried to independently enter the anglo market with no success, by 1992 the band got involved in different projects in Latin America that now are considered epic adventures, Cargo 92 where the band traveled to several countries by ship and the Train of Ice and Fire that consisted in traveling to the deep and savage countryside of Colombia by train, It split up around 1995, but many members had already left by 1992.

Mano Negra mixed a number of styles: rock, flamenco, ska, raï, salsa, reggae and african rhythms. The band, which is still revered on three continents, had been among the pioneers of world music fusion and are a direct influence on countless bands in Europe and South America. The mix of African, Latin and other rhythms is often called mestizo or patchanka (which is the name of one of their albums), Mano Negra is now considered a Cult band and still spreads their spirit to multiple bands around the world.

After the split, Manu Chao who was the leader of the band went to a solo career earning more commercial success due to smoothing his former style into a more friendly and hip sound.

Name

La Mano Negra ("The Black Hand") was an alleged anarchist organization in Spain. The Spanish police accused most of the Spanish anarchists of being part of the organization.[citation needed]

It is also a common expression in Spanish to say "Aquí hubo mano negra" ("There was a black hand here") to say that something has been made illegally or lacking moral values.

Manu Chao's parents were political exiles from Spain who moved to France escaping persecution from the dictatorship of Franco.
