Biography

Arriving in the aftermath of Brit-pop, Mansun was one of the first British guitar-bands to depart from the prevailing styles of the mid-'90s, leaving both light, Beatlesque pop and studied trad-rock behind. Mansun had more in common with early '90s bands like Suede and the Manic Street Preachers, groups that stood defiantly outside of the pop spotlight, yet managed to cultivate a devoted fanbase. By combining a dark, grandiose vision with the driving intensity of hard-rock and the stylish swagger of New Romanticism, Mansun didn't sound a thing like their contemporaries. While their first singles earned a devoted audience, the British music press didn't focus heavily on the group, so it came as a surprise when their debut album, Attack of the Grey Lantern, debuted at number one in early 1997, knocking the long-awaited Blur comeback off the top of the charts. But by that time, Mansun had been hailed as one of the best new bands of the year, and the record was praised throughout the UK music press, making the group one of the most respected and popular new British groups of 1997.

Led by guitarist/vocalist Paul Draper, Mansun formed in Chester, England in the mid-'90s. Draper met Stove King (bass) at Wrexham Art College, discovering that the pair shared a fondness for New Wave acts like Duran Duran and ABC, as well as Prince, Pink Floyd and David Bowie. The pair, who worked at a photo laboratory together, met Dominic Chad (lead guitar) at a local pub he was managing. Forming under the name Grey Lantern, the trio began playing, supported by a series of drummers. After being told by an acquaintence that Grey Lantern was the worst name he had ever heard, the group changed their name to Mansun, which was a truncation of a Verve B-side, "A Man Called Sun."

Early in 1996, the group released the limited-edition single "Take It Easy Chicken" on their own Sci Fi Hi Fi label, and it entered the play list for Radio 1. Shortly afterward, Andy Rathbone became their permanent drummer. Initially, the UK music weeklies tagged Mansun as one of the crowd of post-Oasis, lad-rock bands, primarily because of Chad's heavy drinking and alcohol-fueled antics. Over the course of the year, the guitarist sobered up and the band released a series of singles, each more ambitious than the one before. By the end of the year, they had earned their first Melody Maker cover. In February of 1997, Mansun released their debut album Attack of the Grey Lantern on Parlophone Records. It unexpectedly entered the charts at number one, earning enthusiastic reviews in the process. Six appeared two years later; it didn't fare as well as their first album, but Mansun wowed college audiences with the title track. The band's third effort, Little Kix, did even worse, barely receiving recognition in the States when it appeared in summer 2000. Although work began on a fourth album in spring 2002, Mansun split up in May 2003. The results of the new material appeared on the two-disc collection Kleptomania in 2004. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

Biography

A handsome, appealing dancer with a promising film career during the '30s and '40s, Paul Draper was a casualty of McCarthyism. He started out as a tap dancer and spent most of his career teamed up with harmonica player Larry Adler. Draper distinguished his dance routines by combining traditional tap with elements of classical ballet. He made his feature film debut in Colleen (1936). Both he and Adler's careers were destroyed when the House Un-American Activities Committee accused them of leftist leanings. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

Biography

Mansun were formed in Chester, England in 1995 by Draper and King. The band's foundations were cemented with the addition of Chad, who was bartender at the Fat Cat pub in Chester city centre.

The band's self-financed debut release under the name Manson, and the follow up "Skin Up Pin Up" on EMI offshoot Regal, were followed upon their signing to Parlophone with a run of EPs.

According to Mansun's Kleptomania liner notes, frontman Paul Draper states that "Take It Easy Chicken" was their first song, and that the band really did not know how to play their instruments (let alone play together as a band) when Steve Lamacq and John Peel started to play the song on BBC Radio 1.

The early EPs were followed by the critically acclaimed album Attack Of The Grey Lantern which appeared to contain a conceptual storyline - heavily debated by fans - whilst ending with a hidden track (An Open Letter To The Lyrical Trainspotter, previously featured on Three EP) proclaiming sarcastically 'The lyrics aren't supposed to mean that much'. The band's debut LP knocked fellow Parlophone act Blur's 1997 self-titled album from the top spot of the British album chart. Radiohead are quoted as saying, at that year's Q Awards, that the album was "a real musical achievement".[citation needed]

During the early years of their career, Mansun were noted for changing fashion styles as quickly as musical styles. Such styles ranged from punk fashion, New romantic, Baggy "Madchester" clothes, army fatigues, A Clockwork Orange style "droogs" and even women's clothing. When pressed as to why they did this, the band replied "Because no one dresses like David Bowie anymore".

The second album Six was preceded by the single "Legacy", driven by lyrical references to the Marquis de Sade. The album included a guest monologue by Tom Baker. Several more singles followed, including part 1 of "Being A Girl", "Negative" and a re-recording of the album's title track, "Six" produced by Arthur Baker.

Mansun's third studio album, Little Kix, recorded in Pink Floyd's old studio on a boat, Astoria, was plagued by the record company's desire to bring in an outside producer, and by schisms within the band.

The end came after a UK mini tour in April and May 2002, which was initially promoted under the pseudonym The Masons on Mansun fansites. The band tested out potential tracks from their planned fourth album alongside a handful of old favourites. Due to a Mansun fan petition started on the now defunct Mansunite.com forum, the "sessions" for this unreleased album were released in 2004, along with the non-album singles and a selection of B-sides (chosen by Draper from a top 20 voted for by fans on the band's official website) and rarities, which summarized Mansun's career in a three-CD box set entitled Kleptomania.

Mansun collaborated twice with Howard Devoto (from Magazine and Buzzcocks), who co-wrote EP B-side tracks "Everyone Must Win" and "Railings". They have also covered "Shot By Both Sides" live. The band were remixed by Manchester-based dance outfit 808 State on "Skin Up Pin Up," a song featured on the soundtrack for the 1997 film Spawn.

Legacy - The Best Of Mansun, a greatest hits CD and DVD compilation, was released on 18 September 2006 in the UK. The CD from this package also provides access to download the previous unreleased "South Of The Painted Hall" demo, which was deemed to have been "lost forever" during the compilation of Kleptomania.
