Like his multi-ethnic competitor Fareed Haque, the less romantically named Bill Macpherson creates a guitar culture whose world knows few bounds. Don't let the Scottish name fool you--the aptly named Many Rivers flows over its percussion heavy foundations with bright, swinging African jazz melodies, a few Afro Cuban sojourns, and finally, down home, simple American joys. Growing up partially in Zaire has infused Macpherson with an authentic spirit which zips generously through tunes like "Macambo" and "Shakin' It Out," while the addition on "Downriver" of Tony Guerrero's flugelhorn gives the track the soul of Hugh Masekela, at least for a few minutes. Robbie Hutchinson's steel pans add energy to the tropical spots, and the socially conscious "Peace For Africa" overcomes its relative staidness when Freddie Ravel cameos on keys. ~ Jonathan Widran, All Music Guide
