Maoming (Chinese: 茂名; pinyin: Màomíng) is located in southwestern Guangdong province, People's Republic of China. Facing the South China Sea to the city's south, Maoming city neighbors Zhanjiang in the west and is 362 kilometers (225 miles) from Guangzhou and 121 kilometers (75 miles) from Zhanjiang. The Maoming Port is a Grade I port that handled 16.8 million tons of cargo in 2007. Refined oil and aquatic products are the major export products from the city. Major export destinations include Hong Kong, Macau and ASEAN member nations.
As of the 2007 census, Maoming has a population of 7.2 million. The city's GDP was RMB 106.7 million (US$14.2 billion), ranked 8th in Guangdong's 21 cities.[1] Maoming's GDP ranked 65th of China's 656 cities in 2008. [2]
Maoming's history traces back to about 4,500 years ago. During the Xia Dynasty (2100-1600BC) and the Shang Dynasty (1600-1100BC), the Baiyue tribes inhabited this region. During the Qin Dynasty (221-206BC), the region was divided into Nanhai Shire, Xiang Shire and Guilin Shire. It was named "Maoming" during the Sui Dynasty (AD581-618). Since a large number of minority groups, such as the Yao, the Zhuang and the Miao, are living in Maoming, the city enjoys diverse cultures and folk arts.
With a long coastline (248.4 kilometers), the "First Shoal of China" resort is 25 kilometers (16 miles) from downtown Maoming, and has become a national trading center for beach volleyball where national and international competitions are often hosted.

Geography
Situated in the southwestern coastal area of Guangdong China, Maoming has under its jurisdiction Maonan District, Maogang District, Dianbai County and the cities of Xinyi, Gaozhou and Huazhou at county's level. Maoming has covers an area of 11,455 km2, with a population of 7.16 million. In 2007, the city's GDP was 106.68 billion RMB (US$14.2 billion), up by 13.1 percent over the previous year. In 2008, the city's GDP reached 121.88 billion RMB. Maoming is one of "the Top 100 developed cities in China" and "National Garden City". Maoming is also one of the largest petrochemical production bases, largest fruit production base, tilapia culture and processing base, winter-planted vegetable production base of China, and the important energy, material and heavy-chemical industrial base of Guangdong province.
Economy
Maoming's GDP soared 13.1% from a year earlier to RMB 106.7 billion in 2007, ranking 8th in Guangdong Province, which has the largest economy in China. Its GDP comprised 3.5% of that of Guangdong.
As the main contributor to the city's GDP, the industry sector generated RMB 42.2 billion in valued-added output, accounting for 39.6% of the city's GDP. The service sector, which is also strong, contributed 38.3% of the city's economy. The agricultural sector contributed 22.1% of Maoming's GDP.
Petroleum refining, petrochemicals, raw chemicals and chemical products, mining and agricultural products processing are the major industries in the city. In 2007, the city refined 13.1 million tons of crude oil and produced 1.95 million tons of gasoline, 1.23 million tons of kerosene and 4.2 million tons of diesel fuel.
Examples of the major players in the industry sector include Sinopec (Maoming) Company. Sinopec (Maoming) Company is a subsidiary under China Petroleum and Chemical Corporation (Sinopec), the largest oil refiner in China. The Maoming unit has an annual oil refining capacity of 13.5 million tons. It is capable of producing 1 million tons of ethylene per year. The sales revenue at Sinopec (Maoming) Company surpassed RMB 62.9 billion in 2006.
The sales of consumer goods in the city rose 18.7% year on year to RMB 40.6 billion in 2007, making up 3.8% of Guangdong's total sales value of consumer goods.
The foreign trade value in the city added up to US$593 million in 2007, representing a growth of 20.6% from the previous year. The export value was up 17.3% year on year to US$397 million. Refined oil and aquatic products are the major export products from the city. Major export destinations include Hong Kong, Macau and ASEAN member nations.
In 2007, Maoming utilized US$50 million in foreign direct investment (FDI), up 68.8% compared with the same period last year. The real estate sector and the manufacturing industry attracted most of the foreign investment.[3]

Language and culture

The people of Maoming speak the Gaoyang dialect of Cantonese粤语 and mandarin普通话.
Tourist Attractions
Maoming is home to Gaozhou Xitai Temple冼太庙, Genzi Litchi荔枝 Cultural Tourist Area, the No.1 Shoal of China Vacation Area 中国第一滩, Fang Ji Island放鸡岛 and Tianmashan天马山 Eco-tourist Area.
Gaozhou Xitai Temple was constructed in 1535 in memory of Madam Xi, who was the female leader of Baiyue Tribe. The temple is rich in cultural and historical objects, such as ancient statues, sculptures and stone inscriptions.
The 1st Shoal of China Vacation Area is 25 kilometers (16 miles) from the downtown Maoming, in the Maogang District. With miles of fine beach outside the shelter belt, tourists can enjoy parachute gliding and sailboarding]. It is also a national training center for beach volleyball, and often hosts national and international competitions.
Chicken (Fang Ji) Island is the largest in Maoming covering an area of 1.9 square kilometers (0.7 square miles). This tourist resort is a fascinating diving center boasting clear and unruffled sea waters, famous for its coral reefs and recreational scuba diving. Skin and deep diving, diving of exploration are all available here.
Maoming is a famous litchi production base in China. The Genzi Litchi Cultural Tourist Area is situated in Genzi, a small town in Maoming. Fang Ji Island, also know as Chicken Island, is the largest island in the city. It covers an area of 1.9 km2 and has clear sea waters, beautiful coral reefs and scuba diving. The delicious local foods are also worth recommending. Huazhou Baiqie Chicken, Genzi Beef Rice Noodle and Xinyi Huaixiang Chicken are the most popular local dishes in the city.
