Stillpoint is a trio of veteran ambient musicians -- Martin Franklin, from TUU; Eddie Sayer, from Lights in a Fat City; and Nick Parkin, a solo artist and frequent collaborator with Franklin. Maps Without Edges is their debut -- and thus far only -- CD. The original release contained five tracks, three of which were parts of "Blade Water Stone." This reissue combined those parts into one track and added a track titled "Maps 2 and 3." In both editions, this disc is deep tribal desert ambience. The rhythms are subtle, so the CD borders on tribal minimalism. A deep drone serves as a driver for the soundscapes. The rhythm is part of the atmosphere, which is full of blazing heat and shimmering mirages. This CD is a desert ambience classic. It will appeal to fans of Todd Fletcher, Steve Roach, Ma Ja Le, Biff Johnson and Vidna Obmana. It is an essential CD. The original is available, but hard to find. ~ Jim Brenholts, All Music Guide
