Sangnier, Marc (1873-1950). Generally recognized as the founder of Christian Democracy in France, Sangnier, from 1902 to 1910, presided over the Sillon movement, which attracted numerous intellectuals. A newspaper and review editor, he was also a Catholic député from 1919 to 1924 and in the 1946 Assembly, and the founder, in 1929, of the French youth-hostel movement.
