Marcela Fernandez Violante is known as one of Mexico's best filmmakers. She is also among the most persistent, as she has had to deal with the tumultuous political climate of an industry dominated by men. She began her career in 1971 after graduating from the University Center for Cinematographic Studies in Mexico City. Her first film was a documentary about artist Frida Kahlo. The film won an Ariel--the Mexican Academy Award--for "Best Documentary." Her first feature film, De todos modos Juan te lammas, the story of the Cristero insurrection of 1926-29, came out at the end of 1974. As of 1989, Fernandez Volante became the acting director and film professor at the Center for Cinematographic Studies, Universidad Nacional Autonoma, Mexico City. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi
