Shropshire Marcemeslei (1086) (DB), Marchemeleg (1227). Possibly ‘woodland clearing of a man called Merchelm’, OE pers. name + lēah. Alternatively ‘woodland clearing at (the territory of) the Mercians’, with a first element OE Mierce in a dative plural form Miercum.
