Marcus Antonius

 

1. (143–87 BC), one of the greatest orators of his day, consul in 99, a member of the party of Sulla, and put to death by the supporters of Marius. He was grandfather of the famous Mark Antony (see next entry). He is one of the chief interlocutors in Cicero's De Oratore.
