Marcus Cocceius Nerva

Classical Literature Companion: Marcus Cocceius Nerva

Nerva, Marcus Cocceius (AD 30?–98), Roman emperor AD 96–8. He had come to the fore while aiding Nero in the suppression of the Pisonian conspiracy in 65 (see PISO). Nero also admired his verse composition. He was chosen by the emperor Vespasian as his colleague in the consulship of 71, and was similarly the colleague of the emperor Domitian in 90. After the latter's assassination in 96 the senate chose Nerva as emperor. In his short reign he avoided serious problems, propitiating the army by the adoption of Trajan as heir.
