As the eighth of his Twelve Labors, Herakles was instructed to capture the flesh-eating mares of the Thracian king Diomedes. This he did after the loss of a friend and companion to the mares and after feeding Diomedes to them. The mares became tame after eating their owner. Herakles took them home to Eurystheus.
