Margaret Widdemer was the author of 32 novels and numerous collections of poetry.
Widdemer was home schooled until high school. Having spent much of her childhood in Asbury Park, NJ, several of her books were about life in small beachfront community towns. In 1964, Widdener published Golden Friends I Had, telling of her life as an author and relaying anecdotes about her relationship with other noted writers such as Edna St. Vincent Millay, Joyce Kilmer, Ezra Pound, and F. Scott Fitzgerald.
Her collection of poetry, The Old Road to Paradise, brought Widdener the 1919 American Poetry Society Award, which was the forerunner of the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry.
