Margherita Peak

 

Highest summit of the Ruwenzori Range in East Africa. It is situated on the border between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (Zaire). The higher of the two peaks on Mount Stanley, the central mountain of the Ruwenzori, it rises to 16,795 ft (5,119 m) between Lake Albert and Lake Edward. First climbed in 1906 by an Italian expedition, it was named for Queen Margherita of Italy. It is the third-highest mountain in Africa, after Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya.
