With 12" releases on Kompakt, Shitkatapult and Spectral Sound and a full-length on Shitkatapult quietly unleashed on the public, Peter Grummich is having the sort of year Matthew Dear had during his 2003-2004 campaign of terror on Ghostly, Spectral, M-nus and Perlon. Most artists would be highly pleased with a year featuring such a high pedigree of labels interested in -- and releasing -- their works. But Grummich seals the year with an exclamation point with Maria, a sixteen-track excursion into the dirtier, crunchier side of the state of tech-house, circa 2005. Contributions from Spectral label mates Audion and James Cotton are unquestionably the highlights of the mix, but contributions from Ark and Deadbeat definitely add to the level of quality early on in the mix, and tracks from Dirk Leyers and Kerri Chandler bring it down to an excellent finale. Grummich proves he's not just a skilled producer, but an excellent selector, letting the tracks breathe and bleed into one another almost effortlessly. On the whole, it's an excellent mix that refuses to let up, and it's a fine exclamation point for a career-making year for Grummich. ~ Rob Theakston, Rovi
