Biography

Not only is Marianas Trench the deepest known spot in any ocean (located in the floor of the North Pacific Ocean), but it's also a Vancouver-based rock band that is the brainchild of vocalist/guitarist Josh Ramsay. Ramsay -- whose dad once owned the Little Mountain Sound studio that recorded bands like Aerosmith and AC/DC in the '80s and whose vocal teacher mom recorded and toured with Leonard Cohen for two years -- had been writing and recording since his teen years. He unsurprisingly learned to track his own songs early on, crafting music under the influence of rock and pop-punk bands as well as vocal groups with an ear for bright harmonies. Still a teenager, he began shopping his solo stuff around and took plenty of advice for improvement over the next several years. The rotating cast of musicians comprising the band that eventually appeared around Ramsay settled down by the early 2000s with people from the local scene: guitarist Steve Marshall, keyboardist Matt Webb, bassist Morgan Hempsted, and drummer Ian Casselman. Initially, they were called Ramsay Fiction and the frontman's persistence paid off when the band finally scored a deal with 604 Records (co-founded by Nickelback's Chad Kroeger) in early 2003. By the 2006 release of their debut, however, the group -- now called Marianas Trench -- was comprised of Ramsay alongside Casselman, now guitarist/vocalist Matt Webb, and bassist/vocalist Michael Ayley. Their label debut, Fix Me, surfaced in the fall of 2006, and the single "Say Anything" soon broke into the Top Three on the Canadian singles chart; "Decided to Break It" also did well on radio and MuchMusic. Marianas Trench then contributed a song ("Alibis") to the spring 2007 soundtrack for ABC Family's popular teen sci-fi show Kyle XY. ~ Corey Apar, All Music Guide

History

Early Years

Josh Ramsay started a solo career and needed a supporting band during touring. He managed to recruit high school friend Matt Webb and local musicians Morgan Hempsted and Steve Marshall. The band worked out so well that they decided to form a band named Ramsay Fiction. After signing to 604 Records in early 2003, they changed their name and became Marianas Trench. Marshall and Hempsted would leave the band around this time and Matt would call Mike Ayley, an old friend to join the band who would become the band's new bass guitarist.[2] Matt would also switch from being the band's pianist to become the bands new lead guitarist. The band presented an award during the 2007 MMVA's. They made an appearance on the TV show Kyle XY and their song "Alibis" from their debut album Fix Me, was put on the soundtrack. Shake Tramp peaked on #1 on the Much Music Countdown,iTunes Canada Digital Download and was later nominated for Video of the Year at the Juno Awards. Marianas Trench started getting formally introduced and started getting popular in their 2006 "Virgin Festival" in Vancouver.

Masterpiece Theatre

"Masterpiece Theatre" the band's follow-up album, was released as planned on February 24, 2009 as stated on the band's MySpace on January 22, 2009. The title track "Masterpiece Theatre I" is the basis of the entire album. The sixth track is titled "Masterpiece Theatre II," which is an expansion of the first track. The twelfth and final track is titled "Masterpiece Theatre III," which quotes each previous song in the album in addition to incorporating rhythms, melodies, and concepts from the other tracks. A true masterpiece in itself, lyricist and lead singer Josh Ramsay chose to make "Masterpiece Theatre III" a compilation on purpose. Contrary to popular belief, each "Masterpiece Theatre" track (I, II, and III) were written separately. The original track was not written and then rewritten thrice. Bassist Mike Ayley, was stated saying "Masterpiece II and III are amazing songs that really explore the potential of Josh's writing."[3] The album debuted #4 on the Canadian Albums Chart one week after being released. "Cross My Heart" became the band's second song to peak at #1 on both the Much Music Countdown and iTunes Canada Digital Download. "Cross My Heart" was nominated for four MMVAs in 2009 and was certified platinum in Canada[4]. Recently after, Marianas Trench reached the #1 spot with the song All To Myself on Much Music's MOD. All To Myself also made Platinum certification in August 2009 in Canada.[5] Masterpiece Theatre also received a WCMA for Best Pop Recording on September 20, 2009.[6]

The music video for "Beside You" premiered on MuchOnDemand on October 30th, 2009.
