Female symbol of the Republic. The name originated in the Revolution, and was at first used pejoratively (with possible connotations of prostitution) by enemies of the new order; since then Marianne has been represented in many guises, which are traced in M. Agulhon's Marianne au combat (1979).

Marianne, a Novelle by F. von Saar, published in 1869 and included in 1877 in Novellen aus Österreich. In the form of letters from a young artist in Vienna, it tells of the unfulfilled and barely expressed love between him and a young married woman. The story lasts over a summer from May to August and ends with her death by a stroke after a last dance with him at a wedding party at Grinzing.
