Biography

In films from 1948, solemn-faced Marianne Stone has probably appeared in more films than any other British actress her age. Though she had a few major roles early on, Stone quickly settled into featured parts and bits, often unbilled. She was equally adept at playing lower-class housewives, harpies, officious shop clerks, and ritzy society reporters. Her Vivian Dankbloom in Stanley Kubrick's Lolita (1962) was one of the few instances in which her character actually had a name. Marianne Stone was married to London show-business columnist Peter Noble. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Marianne Stone
Born 23 August 1922
London, England

Marianne Stone (born 23 August 1922) was Britain’s most prolific character actress appearing in hundreds of films from the early 1940s to the late 1980s. She usually played working class parts such as barmaids, secretaries and landladies, and is probably best known for her contribution to the nine Carry On films which she appeared in. She also appeared in one episode of the Carry On Laughing television series ("The Case of the Screaming Winkles"). She was a great scene stealer, however small the part, and is particularly funny in Carry On at Your Convenience and To Sir With Love. Among her many other films are appearances in such classics as Lolita, Oh! What a Lovely War, Brighton Rock and the first two "Quatermass" films. Her most serious and arguably most dramatic role was as Lena Van Broecken in three episodes of the BBC's Secret Army between 1977 and 1978.

Stone, whose nickname was "Mugsie", was credited in her early films under the name "Mary Stone", and also has been credited as "Marion Stone". She was married for fifty years, from 1947 to 1997, to actor turned theatre critic and film historian Peter Noble, with whom she had two children, one of whom is DJ Kara Noble. Although she appeared in a record 201 films, in the 1980s the offers dried up and she retired.[1]
