Marina Bay is a bay near Central Area in the southern part of Singapore, and lies to the east of the Downtown Core. An artificial bay, it was formed when land reclamation created the Marina Centre and Marina South areas, which form a body of sheltered waters of what was once open sea. In the reclamation process, Telok Ayer Basin was removed from the map, while the Singapore River's mouth now flows into the bay instead of directly into the sea. A barrage was completed in 2008 to make Marina Bay a reservoir for drinking water.

In contemporary local common usage, however, the term Marina Bay has largely been attached to the developments in the vicinity of Marina Mall in the Marina South reclaimed area, particularly to the eateries found there. Although technically erroneous, this association may have been stemmed from the association of the venue's limited accessibility to the Marina Bay MRT Station, which has served as the main means of public transport to Marina South.

It was announced in 2007 that Marina Bay will play host to a Formula One Race. The inaugural Singapore Grand Prix took place on September 28 2008 on a street circuit through Marina Bay[1]. It was the first ever Formula One Grand Prix to be staged at night, with the track fully floodlit.

Water management

In 2004, the Public Utilities Board publicly announced plans to construct a new downtown reservoir by damming the Marina Channel. This barrage was completed in 2008. Known as the Marina Barrage, it turned Marina Bay and the Kallang Basin into a confined freshwater reservoir with limited access to marine transportation to regulate the water quality.

The new reservoir provides another source of drinking water for Singapore, as well as a stable water level for a variety of water activities and events. The barrage will also prevent flooding in the Chinatown area.

Development

Marketing

On 21 July 2005, after spending $400 000 on a massive branding exercise,[2]. the Urban Redevelopment Authority formally announced that Marina Bay will be chosen as the new marketing brandname for the new developments to extend to the central business district in the Marina South area, particularly to the early phases which involves developments wrapping around the bay. Many Singaporeans criticised this publicity effort by the government as a waste of public funds.[2] These developments has been known by other names before, including the New Downtown, Marina Bayfront, and CBD Extension, as well as names such as New Downtown@Marina Bay in recent years.

Future developments around Marina Bay are expected to further support Singapore's continuing growth as a major business and financial hub in the region. The area has also been planned to become a lifestyle hub and with 24/7 round the clock vibrancy and energy. It would consist of residential, office, and commercial developments, as well as many entertainment outlets and attractions to inject life into the area.
