Biography

Marine Research formed in late 1997 as a continuation of Heavenly -- who disbanded the prior year following the tragic suicide of drummer Mathew Fletcher. With the remaining four-fifths of Heavenly moving on with drummer John Stanley (aka DJ Downfall), Amelia Fletcher (vocals), Cathy Rogers (vocals/keyboards), Rob Pursey (bass), and Peter Momtchiloff (guitar) continued with their formula of uppity twee-pop and punk rock undertones that root back from their Talulah Gosh days. Immediately releasing their debut single "Queen B" in 1998 and a split EP with Built to Spill, K Records eventually signed the Oxford quintet that resulted in the CD EP Parallel Horizons and the full-length Sounds of the Gulf Stream later on that same year. ~ Mike DaRonco, All Music Guide

Marine Research was an indie rock/twee pop band, based in Oxford/London (UK), formed in 1997 by four of the five members of Heavenly (Amelia Fletcher, Peter Momtchiloff, Cathy Rogers and Rob Pursey), following the suicide of Heavenly drummer Mathew Fletcher.[1] The band were joined on drums by DJ Downfall (real name: John Stanley), who is also a solo recording artist.

The band disbanded in 1999. Vocalist and keyboardist Cathy Rogers moved to the US, and became well known for producing and starring in the television show Junkyard Wars. Lead singer and songwriter Amelia Fletcher was also in the group Talulah Gosh and currently records with Tender Trap, alongside bassist Rob Pursey and drummer John Stanley. Guitarist Peter Momtchiloff now plays in Would-be-goods, Speed of Sound and Scarlet's Well.

Professional reviews

The band recorded just one album Sounds From the Gulf Stream, released on K Records (US) and Elefant Records (Spain). Nods to Heavenly are present,[1] especially in terms of the twangy guitar and multi-layered vocals, but Marine Research were a far more complex and mature band, experimenting with musical textures and evoking the colorful canvas of classic Stereolab.
