Berber dynasty that followed the
Almohad dynasty in North Africa in the 13th – 15th centuries. The Mar
inids were a tribe of the Zan
atah group, which was allied to the Umayyads in Córdoba. In 1248 a Mar
inid leader, Ab
u Ya
hy
a, captured Fès and made it the Mar
inid capital. The capture of Marrakech (1269) made the Mar
inids the masters of Morocco. They waged inconclusive war in Spain and Africa that gradually depleted their resources, reducing the realm to anarchy in the 15th century. Sa'd
i sharifs captured Fès in 1554.
