(b Kirkland Lake, 20 Aug 1930). Canadian conductor. He studied in Venice and Toronto as a pianist as well as conductor; he made his conducting début with the Canadian Opera Company in 1957, and conducted in London in 1963 where he was music director at Sadler's Wells, 1966-8, where he was particularly admired for his Verdi performances. He returned to Ottawa in 1969 as conductor of the new National Arts Centre Orchestra; there he presented many new Canadian works before he left in 1982.
