Mario Bros.

Games: Mario Bros.

Game Description

Mama Mia! What a bind the Mario Brothers are in this time! Having gained dutiful employment as plumbers, the brothers Mario and Luigi find themselves deep in the sewers facing quite a pest problem. The boys must defeat Shellcreepers, who look a lot like turtles, Sidesteppers, who look a lot like crabs, and Fighterflies, who look a lot like fireflies, only about 10,000 times larger. There is also a dangerous ice machine named Slipice who can not only freeze the brothers but also freeze platforms, making traction tenuous.

The game is arranged in a side view with several platforms to run and jump on. Play as Mario in the one-player game or have a friend join you as Luigi in the two-player version. To defeat your enemies you must knock the floor below them to flip them over and then run over them to push them off the screen. Each enemy presents its own challenge. Shellcreepers are pretty straight forward. Hit them and they flip. Sidesteppers require two hits. The first hit only makes them mad. Fighterflies, who hover from place to place, require some timing, as you can only hit them when they are touching a platform.

Also thrown into the fray: fireballs, valuable coins to collect, an all-powerful "POW" button that will hit all floors at once, and, in later levels, deadly icicles. At the end of certain levels, there is a pest-free bonus round, where players try to collect up to eight coins in a limited amount of time.

Roots & Influences

Mario first appeared in the game Donkey Kong (which took a cue from the film King Kong) as the character Jumpman. By the time Donkey Kong Jr. came out, he had a name. Mario Brothers marked the designation of his occupation as well as the debut of his brother Luigi.
