Mario Caldato, Jr. (also known as Mario C.) is a Brazilian record producer and studio engineer best known for his work with the Beastie Boys and Tone Loc. Born February 24, 1961 in São Paulo, Brazil, he and his family moved to Los Angeles in 1963. Caldato played keyboards and percussion in various bands ("Soul Stick", "Wake", "Phaze" and "Phaze II"), and started a PA rental with Mike Nishita, brother of his friend "Money" Mark Nishita. After building several of his own studios and touring Jamaica for a while, he produced Tone Loc's single "Cheeba Cheeba", and engineered the Beastie Boys' second album Paul's Boutique soon afterward. Since then, he has produced many albums for artists as various as Super Furry Animals and Molotov, but also produced most Beastie Boys albums up to and including Hello Nasty, all three Money Mark albums, and Molotov's "Apocalypshit". He has also produced many Brazilian artists, including Seu Jorge, Planet Hemp, Bebel Gilberto, Marcelo D2, and Chico Science & Nação Zumbi.

In 2008, he mixed the self-titled debut EP of One Day as a Lion, a project comprising Zack de la Rocha (of Rage Against the Machine) and Jon Theodore (previously of The Mars Volta).[1]

Recently, Caldato has been producing the upcoming Flobots album, which is due for release in 2010.[2]
