Biography

Trumpeter/synth programmer Mark Isham was not only an important part of the Windham Hill stable, but also a successful and versatile composer for film and television, garnering equal acclaim for both his new age and soundtrack work. Born September 7, 1951, to a musical family in New York, Isham began studying classical music (specifically trumpet, piano, and violin) as a child. His family later moved to San Francisco, where Isham played with several local orchestras. However, he was also interested in jazz, pop, and rock music, and moonlighted with a wide variety of local bands; during the '70s, he also learned to program synthesizers. Eventually, he left classical music behind and became a touring and session musician for both jazz (Pharoah Sanders, Charles Lloyd) and pop (the Beach Boys, Van Morrison) artists. He joined jazz pianist Art Lande's Rubisa Patrol quartet, where he displayed a strong Miles Davis influence, and founded a band called Group 87 that played what was essentially contemporary instrumental music years before the term existed as a new age subgenre (they released two albums, the first in 1980). The '80s also saw Isham continue his sideman activities, going on to play with the likes of David Sylvian, Was (Not Was), the Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, Suzanne Vega, XTC, Joni Mitchell, and Willie Nelson, among many others.

1983 was a pivotal year for Isham: he released his solo debut on Windham Hill, Vapor Drawings, and scored his first film, the Disney release Never Cry Wolf. The first Windham Hill release to emphasize electronics, Vapor Drawings established Isham as a composer adept at blending synthetic and acoustic timbres and became a progressive electronic classic. Meanwhile, Never Cry Wolf quickly led to numerous other soundtrack assignments, demonstrating Isham's facility with a wide variety of musical styles and instrumental settings. Seeking wider exposure by the late '80s, Isham began recording for Virgin, although he continued to release material on Windham Hill as well. He was nominated for Grammys for Best New Age Performance for his albums Castalia (1988) and Tibet (1989), and finally won for 1990's Mark Isham. In 1992, Isham premiered his first commissioned orchestral work, Five Stories for Trumpet and Orchestra, with the St. Louis Symphony, also serving as the soloist. The same year, he was nominated for an Academy Award for his score for A River Runs Through It, which increased Hollywood's demand for his services even further; among his highest-profile assignments in the years to come were Short Cuts, Quiz Show, Kiss the Girls, Blade, the Grammy nominated Men of Honor, Save the Last Dance, Don't Say a Word, Life as a House, and The Majestic. Isham also won an Emmy for his scoring work on the television show EZ Streets, and earned nominations for Chicago Hope and Nothing Sacred. In 1995, Isham released his first album for Columbia, Blue Sun, which found him moving into full-fledged contemporary jazz. He continued in that direction with his next non-soundtrack project, the In a Silent Way tribute/reinterpretation of Miles Remembered: The Silent Way Project, issued in 1999. ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide

Biography

Versatile musician Mark Isham is both a Grammy award-winning recording artist and one of the most noteworthy film composers of the 1980s and beyond. Born in New York to a violinist and a music teacher, Isham studied trumpet, violin, and piano as a child, and began his professional career as a classical and jazz trumpeter in California. Adding synthesizers to his repertoire, he worked as a jazz, rock, and New Age musician throughout the 1980s and 1990s, winning a Grammy award for his 1990 CD Mark Isham.

Isham began his parallel career as a film composer in the 1980s, providing the scores for the Arctic adventure Never Cry Wolf (1983) and the Mel Gibson-Diane Keaton period romance Mrs. Soffel (1984). Forging a fruitful collaboration with iconoclastic director Alan Rudolph, Isham scored Trouble in Mind (1985), Mortal Thoughts (1991), Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle (1994), Afterglow (1997), and won the Los Angeles Film Critics prize for The Moderns (1988). Named one of the top composers of the 1980s by the AFI, the composer's film career continued to surge in the 1990s. Drawing on his varied background for an eclectic range of films, Isham scored such critical hits as Reversal of Fortune (1990), Robert Altman's Raymond Carver interpretation Short Cuts (1993), and Robert Redford's Quiz Show (1994), as well as more mainstream box-office fare, including Timecop (1994), Kiss the Girls (1997), Blade (1998), and Varsity Blues (1999). Isham received an Oscar nomination for Redford's A River Runs Through It (1992) and a Golden Globe nod for Nell (1994). Adding TV to his résumé, he provided the music for CBS' hospital drama Chicago Hope and won an Emmy in 1997 for his theme to E Z Streets. ~ Lucia Bozzola, All Movie Guide

Life and career

Isham was born in New York City, New York, the son of Patricia (née Hammond), a violinist, and Howard Fuller Isham, a professor of humanities.[1] He studied classical music at an early age and played trumpet, piano and violin. The Isham family later moved to San Francisco, where Mark found work in several of the local orchestras. He also became actively involved in the Bay Area rock and roll scene of the 1960s, performing live with several of the local groups.

He was a member of a Marin County band called Beefy Red from 1970-72, performing both on trumpet and soprano saxophone. (The group also included guitarist Barry Finnerty, who later played and recorded with Miles Davis, the Crusaders, and the Brecker Brothers, among others.) After performing in music venues ranging from Marin's 'Lion's Share' to San Francisco's Fillmore West, Beefy Red disbanded in January, 1972.

In 1974, Isham joined former Beefy Red members Phil Wood (flugelhorn) and James Preston (drums) in The Sons of Champlin. The Sons of Champlin, like Beefy Red, were unusual in the San Francisco psychedelic scene in featuring a large brass section. Isham wrote - and performed on keyboards and trumpet - his recording debut on the instrumental song 'Marp' (a takeoff on the name of the then-new 'Arp' synthesizer) on the Sons' self-titled album, released in 1975.

During the 1970s, he learned to program synthesizers and became active in the progressive jazz movement. In 1975 Isham and pianist Art Lande formed a quartet called Rubisa Patrol. They released two albums: Rubisa Patrol (1976) and Desert Marauders (1978). It was in this group that Isham surfaced as a solo trumpeter with a strong Miles Davis influence.

In 1977, Isham performed on the Taj Mahal album Evolution (The Most Recent). This was the beginning of Isham's career as a sessions artist, which continues to present day. He has worked with artists as diverse as Van Morrison, Lyle Lovett, Willie Nelson, Ziggy Marley, David Sylvian, Hector Zazou, David Torn, Toots Thielemans and Tanita Tikaram.

In 1978, he formed a group called Group 87. Group 87 featured bassist Patrick O'Hearn, drummers Terry Bozzio and Peter Van Hooke (at different times) and guitarist Peter Maunu. All of these artists would work with Isham in future solo projects. They released two albums: Group 87 (1980) and A Career in Dada Processing (1984).

From 1979 through 1983, he worked with Van Morrison's band playing synthesizer and trumpet on five of his abums: Into the Music; Common One; Beautiful Vision; Inarticulate Speech of the Heart and Live at the Grand Opera House Belfast. He also features in the 1980 concert from Morrison's 2006 DVD Live at Montreux 1980/1974, playing trumpet and soprano saxophone.

In 1983, he released his first solo album, Vapor Drawings. Its style is an atmospheric and deeply experimental blend of modern jazz and electronic music. It was also the first album released on the Windham Hill label to feature extensive use of synthesizers.

That same year he also scored the soundtrack for the Carroll Ballard film Never Cry Wolf. This brought immediate attention and subsequent film score jobs. His second solo album was a compilation of these works titled Film Music (1985).

Additionally, in 1983, Isham was invited to play with RMS and Gil Evans at the Montreux Jazz Festival. He flew in to Montreux and played the same night whilst extremely jet-lagged. The resulting concert was eventually released on DVD in 2004 on the Angel Air Record Label.

From 1987 to 1992 he composed scores for the "Rabbit Ears Storybook Classics" series of videos and CDs. These were narrated by famous actors such as William Hurt and Glenn Close.

His albums Castalia (1988) and Tibet (1989) were both Grammy-nominated. He won in 1990 with his album Mark Isham.

In 1992, he published his first orchestral work Five Stories for Trumpet and Orchestra. The same year he earned an Academy Award nomination for the soundtrack of the film A River Runs Through It. During the following years he became a prolific film score composer. Some of his film scores include: Save the Last Dance, Men of Honor and October Sky.

In 1995, he released an album titled Blue Sun. This was his first album to follow a mainstream contemporary jazz format.

From 1996 through 2000, he formed a group to interpret the music of Miles Davis's late 1960s through mid-1970s electric jazz fusion and released an album, Miles Remembered: The Silent Way Project, which was recorded live.

Isham is a practitioner of Scientology.

In 2007, his music, "A Sense of Touch" from the soundtrack of Crash is featured in the Law & Order SVU season finale "Screwed".
