Market Village is a mall in Markham, Ontario and is a Chinese mall in Toronto.[citation needed]
Built by Cedarland Properties Limited in 1990, it attempts to mirror and mimic a rural town Ontario, the northwest and southeast façades feature barn like and farm house designs. In the 1800s and early 1900s, the property was farmland.
Market Village was originally built as a retail addition to the Cullen Country Barns located to the west side of the new mall along Kennedy Road.
However, the new tenants of the mall were (and still are) mainly catering to Cantonese Chinese clientele and attracted few non-Chinese shoppers in the early years. Some parts of the south side of the mall was enclosed in 1995 (two storey office space was demolished during this time). Many of the original tenants have left and in their place new stores reflecting the retail trends within the Chinese community in the Greater Toronto Area.
The mall was threatened with new competition by the newer Pacific Mall, which was built on the location of the former Cullen Country Barns (demolished), but the two malls have co-existed and dominates retail in the region. Indeed, as the existing traffic and parking was already congested with the opening of Market Village, the addition of Pacific Mall has made these problems significantly worse (for instance, the underground parking in Pacific Mall is not nearly enough to handle the customers attracted by the new complex).

Most stores in Market Village are family run stores, but there are a few non-Chinese retailers and some stores with links to Hong Kong have been opened. Some stores, along with these in Pacific Mall, have been targeted by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) for selling counterfeit DVDs,video games and CDs. There are currently 149 stores in market village listed on the map at the front entrance.

On June 15, 2006, Pacific Mall and Market Village announced plans for a major expansion to the south shopping complex in south Markham. An additional 400,000 square feet (37,000 m²) of retail space, a luxury hotel and a multi-level parking structure is to be built. The project was expected to begin in a year or two, and would bring the combined size of the two malls to about 1 million square feet (92,900 square meters).[1] However, that plan was delayed until late 2009 and is set to open in the early 2010s.[2]
By 2009, plans have the entire mall demolished and replaced with a larger and modern complex called the Remington Centre. It will feature a two level structure with over 800,000 square feet (74,000 m2) of retail and commercial space and a condo/hotel tower located on the southeast end. Plans have the Remington Centre aiming for LEED status along with the installation of 1100 tonnes of geothermal capacity[3]. Construction is due to begin in late 2012.
