Russia (Saratov): founded in 1767 as Baronsk, although the alternative name of Yekaterinstadt 'Catherine's Town' after Catherine II the Great soon became popular. The city was given the German name of Markstadt 'Marx's Town' in 1920 after Karl Marx (1818–83), the German political theorist, economist and author of Das Kapital published in 1867. The name was shortened in 1941 and is spelt Marx in some atlases.
