Biography

The longtime drummer for punk trailblazers the Ramones, Marky Ramone was born Marc Bell in New York City on July 15, 1956. An alumnus of the late-'60s band Dust, in 1977 he resurfaced as a member of Richard Hell & the Voidoids on their classic Blank Generation album. Bell joined the Ramones in time to record 1978's Road to Ruin, adopting the name Marky Ramone; he continued with the group through 1983, returning to the lineup four years later and remaining on the roster until they disbanded in 1996. Following the Ramones' breakup, Marky formed a new band, the Intruders, releasing the album Answer to Your Problems? in mid-1999. In 2000, Ramone toured Europe with the Belgian punk band the Buckweeds, and later recorded and performed live with the Speed Kings, led by former Buckweeds frontman Nick "CQ" Cooper. In 2002, Ramone signed on to tour as drummer with horror rock legends the Misfits. The two-CD Start of the Century appeared in 2006 with one disc of new material and one disc of Ramones classics redone. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide

Marky Ramone (born Marc Steven Bell on July 15, 1956 in Brooklyn, New York) is an American drummer. He is best known for being the drummer for the Ramones, but has also played in other notable bands like Dust and Richard Hell and The Voidoids. He is currently hosting "Marky Ramone's Punk Rock Blitzkrieg" on Sirius XM 28/52 Faction, Tuesdays at 8pm ET.[1] Marky can be seen on stages all over the world with his new band, Marky Ramone's Blitzkrieg.

Marky is the only living member of the longest running Ramones line-up (15 years) featuring Johnny Ramone, Joey Ramone, Dee Dee Ramone, and Marky.[2] Unrelated, each band member adopted a pseudonym with the surname Ramone.

Musical career

Marc started playing drums for hard rock band Dust. He recorded two albums with the band, before getting into the punk scene. In the mid-70s he played with Wayne County and the Backstreet Boys. Wayne County later became Jayne County, rock's first transsexual singer. In the late 1970s, he joined Richard Hell & The Voidoids. He played on the Voidoid's first album, Blank Generation.

When Tommy Ramone decided to quit the Ramones in 1978, Bell was asked to be Tommy's replacement, and was renamed Marky Ramone.

Marky played drums with the Ramones for 5 years. He was asked to leave the band in 1983 due to alcoholism (or "to fight his demons" as he put it). He returned in 1987 and played with the band up until their retirement in 1996[3].

In 1995, Marky appeared with the Ramones on an episode of The Simpsons.[4]

In 1996, Marky joined Dee Dee Ramone and his wife 'Barbara Ramone' to play with The Ramainz, performing Ramones songs for fun.

In 2000, Marky joined Joey Ramone, lead vocalist of the Ramones, to record Joey's only solo album, entitled Don't Worry About Me.

In October 2001, Marky appeared on MTV accepting a lifetime achievement award presented by Bono of U2 to the Ramones.

In March 2002, Marky was inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, at New York's Waldorf Astoria as a member of the Ramones.

He recorded some albums with his solo band Marky Ramone & the Speedkings, as well as many 7" releases.[5] Marky Ramone & the Speedkings toured the world from 2002 to 2003.

In September 2004, Marky served as Executive Producer and released a Ramones DVD entitled Ramones Raw on Image Entertainment, which featured footage of the band while on tour all over the world along with other various rare, vintage footage. Much of the candid footage is courtesy of Marky Ramone's personal video library. The DVD was finished just in time to include commentary from Johnny Ramone, who died from prostate cancer on September 15, 2004. The commentary also includes Marky Ramone. Ramones: Raw is the only certified Gold selling Ramones DVD and one of only two US gold selling releases in the Ramones entire catalog. The other being the greatest hits double LP Ramonesmania released in 1988. Ramones: Raw is also the highest charting release in the Ramones history.

In January 2005, Marky went to tour with Russian band Tarakany. The tour was called "Ramones Night Tour 2005: Marky Ramone & Tarakany!"

On April 22, 2008, Marky Ramone appeared on a new CD in Canada playing drums with the Canadian punk band called Teenage Head.[6] The CD is called "Teenage Head with Marky Ramone" and it was released in the USA on June 10, 2008. It was produced by Daniel Rey, who's worked with the Ramones among others. It was recorded in 2003 on two separate visits by Marky to Canada.

Marky has a dvd coming out next year called "The Job That Ate My Brain - the Marky Ramone Story."

He has also teamed up with Tommy Hilfiger's, Hilfger Denim, to launch their first clothing line consisting of leather jackets, jeans and t-shirts. The line will be in stores early 2009.

In 2009 he has been playing cover songs of the band, The Ramones, with a new band.
