Juin, Marshal Alphonse Pierre (1888-1967). Son of a gendarme, Juin was born at Bône in Algeria and commissioned from Saint-Cyr, where he was a classmate of de Gaulle. He fought as an infantry officer in Morocco in WW I, and was captured commanding a division in 1940. Released in 1941, he became military governor of Morocco under Vichy but went over to the Allies in 1942. He commanded the first-rate French Expeditionary Corps in the campaign in Italy, and was COS of the National Defence Committee in 1944-7. Resident-general of Morocco in 1947-51, he was appointed marshal in 1952, the last to be granted the honour while still living, but broke with de Gaulle over his policy during the Algerian independence war and retired in 1960.
