Marshall, Thurgood, Sworn in to Supreme Court
Oct 2, 1967. Thurgood Marshall was sworn in as the first black associate justice to the US Supreme Court. On June 27, 1991, he announced his resignation, effective upon the confirmation of his successor. See also: “Marshall, Thurgood: Birth Anniversary” (July 2).
