Mar-tin'ee-a. A single species, related to Proboscidea , occasionally grown by flower arrangers for the seed pods.
Description
Leaves large, opposite, triangular, with long petioles. Flowers large and bell-shaped in loose racemes.
How to Grow
These sprawling plants are easy to grow in full sun and enriched garden soil. Where summers are short, start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost and transplant after danger of frost is over. Where summers are long, sow seeds in warm soil. Prefers warm weather.
Martynia annua
To 6 ft. (1.8 m) high. Flowers bell-shaped, white to reddish purple, spotted with yellow, red, and purple, to 2 in. (5 cm) long. Fruit to 1Ɖ in. (4 cm) long. Tropical America. Tender annual.
