Biography

Sixteen-year-old Alabaman Mary Anderson made her first screen appearance as Maybelle Meriweather in Gone With the Wind (1939). As a 20th Century-Fox contractee in the mid-1940s, she was seen in Hitchcock's Lifeboat (1943) and in the lavish biopic Wilson (1944). She ended her film career in 1953, occasionally reemerging on television, notably in the role of Catherine Harrington on the prime-time soaper Peyton Place. Mary Anderson (born April 3, 1920) is an American actress, who appeared in 31 films and 22 television productions between 1939 and 1965.

Early life

Born Bebe Anderson in Birmingham, Alabama, she was educated at Howard College (now Samford University) .[1]

Career

After doing two uncredited roles, Anderson made her first important screen appearance as Maybelle Merriweather in Gone With the Wind (1939). Ending her film career in the early 1950s, she occasionally acted on television, for example, as Catherine Harrington in the prime-time soap opera Peyton Place in 1964, (episodes 2-20).

Many times confused with the stage actress of the same name (1859–1940) or silent film actress of same name (1897–1986), Mary Anderson appeared in a number of films in the 1940s and was credited under her birth name in a 1940 short film.

Personal life

Anderson was married to cinematographer Leon Shamroy from 1953 to his death in 1974.
