Maryland Route 228 is a state highway in Prince Georges County and Charles County. It carries the name of Berry Road and it is a divided four-lane road that runs East/West, starting at MD 210 in Accokeek and ending at US 301 in Waldorf. Its total length is 6.88 miles (11.07 km).
Route 228 is a major link for commuters, especially as a bypass to MD 5/US 301 when traveling south from Washington, DC. Most of the highway runs through Charles County; the remainder is in Prince George's County.
As of January, 2008, The intersection of Routes 210 and 228 is one of only six continuous-flow intersections (CFIs) in the United States. The CFI was built in 2000.
Prior to 1996, MD 228 served as a two lane roadway which originally transitioned into MD 229. It was then upgraded to a divided four-lane highway shortly after this period. A connection to MD 210 wasn't established until 2000 when 228 had completed its transition to a divided four-lane highway.
