Massilia

Massilia (Gk. Massalia; Marseilles), colony founded c.600 BC by Phocaea, an Ionian Greek city, on the Mediterranean coast of France, east of the river Rhône. In the civil war between Caesar and Pompey, after a resolute stand in favour of the latter, the city surrendered to Caesar in 49 BC.
