Review

Another interesting addition to Mike Alway's el (Mark II) catalog. Vincent Price's Master of the Macabre may not have much musical connection with the jet-setting style of early el releases, but it sure carries the fantasy/escapist mark that was always the other half of the el equation. The three radio plays collected here were produced in 1957 for CBS' Suspense program and include what is perhaps Price's most well known (and loved) spoken word performance, "The Pit and the Pendulum." With flair and flamboyance, Price delivers his parts with a Euro-slickness and wry intellectualism -- the kind of image Alway always strove to cultivate in his own roster of talent. Accompanied by a well-written essay, the el edition of Master of the Macabre serves to entertain and enlighten Vincent Price fans of any era, as well as up the "cool" factor of any eclectic record collection. ~ J.
