MASwings is a regional airline operating the Rural Air Services (RAS) in East Malaysia. It took over the RAS previously operated by FlyAsianXpress. The first flight was on 1 October 2007.[1]. It has its head office in the Beautiful Jade Centre in Miri, Sarawak.[2]

MASwings is a wholly owned subsidiary of Malaysia Airlines.

On 9 November 2007, MASwings signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the purchase of 7 ATR 72-500s with options for 3 additional aircraft to expand its services in the states of Sabah and Sarawak in East Malaysia. MASwings is expected to receive delivery of the first aircraft in 2008, second 6 aircraft in 2009 and remaining 3 (optional) by 2010.

Currently,MASwings began to name their newly-acquired ATR 72-500 aircrafts after places in Sabah & Sarawak.The name of the aircraft are:

9M-MWA: "Kuching" (State Capital of Sarawak), 9M-MWB: "Kinabalu" (Mount Kinabalu,Sabah), 9M-MWC: "Mulu" (Mulu National Park,Sarawak), 9M-MWD: "Sandakan",(Town of Sandakan,Sabah), 9M-MWE: "Mukah" (Town of Mukah,Sarawak), and 9M-MWF: "Sipadan" (An island in semporna, Sabah)

Accidents and Incidents

  • September 13, 2008 - A De Havilland Canada DHC-6-300 Twin Otter (9M-MDN) as MASwings flight 3540 overshoot the runway while in a flight from Miri to Ba'kelalan via Lawas. There are 2 crews (pilots) and 12 passengers and all of them survived the crash. The flight departs Lawas Airport at 0845 hours and crashed during landing in Ba'kelalan Airport at 0934 hours. The aircraft landed on a paddy field about 10 metres off the runway and stopped about 768 metres from where it lands. It is the first non-fatal incident by MASwings. The next day, they sent a group to investigate the crash.[4]
