Matador Records keeps the indie rock banner waving. Positioning itself as an alternative to music conglomerates such as Sony and Universal, the company releases CDs and albums (yes, vinyl albums) by a diverse group of about 20 artists and bands (many referred to as independent or "indie" rock), including Cat Power, Spoon, Interpol, Stephen Malkmus, M. Ward, and Yo La Tengo. Over the years the label has expanded its musical taste to include hip hop, electronic, and experimental sounds in its portfolio. UK-based Beggars Group owns half of the company.
