In film or videotape production, a dissolve where the image that fades in closely resembles the image that has faded out (see fade-in; fade-out). This is accomplished when each of the cameras to be used in the dissolve are set up so that their shots match. For example, if each camera is focused on an individual face, and each subject is in the same position, the matched dissolve will produce an effect where one person's face and features are slowly transformed into the other person's face and features.
