Matharu or Matharoo (ਮਠਾੜੂ in Gurmukhī script) is a prominent Sikh clan belonging to the Khatri/Rajput and Jat tribe.
Sir Denzil Ibbetson counted the Matharus as one of the major Tarkhan tribes of the Punjab and the Northwest Frontier Province, centred in Amritsar, Jalandhar, Lahore and Ludna.
The Matharu clan originated from Punjab. They were eventually accepted into the Ramgarhia, Jatt(mostly Tarkhans) communities, taking up carpentry and agriculture.
They were skilled artisans in the craft of woodwork, ivory and ebony inlay work and ironcraft. They were also in agriculture and were also called Jatt.
Matharus also have historical connections with people named Nanda.
Matharus claiming Jadaun Rajput ancestry are found in Sialkot, Narowal, Gujranwala, Hoshiarpur, Jalandhar and Patiala districts.
