Matheus de Sancto Johanne

Music Encyclopedia: Matheus de Sancto Johanne

(fl 1365-?1389). French composer. In 1378 he was a member of the chapel of Louis I of Anjou, and from 1382 until at least 1386 he was a chaplain at the papal chapel in Avignon. He may subsequently have served at the court of the Duke of Orleans. His surviving compositions - three or four ballades, two rondeaux and a motet - reveal him as one of Machaut's successors in developing the Ars Subtilior. The rhythm and notational technique is most complex in the three-voice works; his motet, in an English source, is unusual for its five-voice scoring.
