Biography

Matheus composed in the genre of sacred and secular music including motets, ballades, and rondeaux. He was from the Diocese of Morinum and served in the court of Louis I of Anjou. While in Avignon he composed a ballade on Pope Clement VII which was in strict form, maintained a ballanced rhythm and was scored for three voices. Matheus was possibly a singer who also served in the court of the Duke of Orleans. Only the top voices of his songs contained texts and his rhythmic notations were more complex than some of his contemporaries, particularly in his three and four part compositions. ~ Keith Johnson, Rovi
