Flemish family of bellfounders. They worked in Mechlin until c1695, later branches of the family working in St Trond, Tirlemont and Louvain. The most celebrated member was Matthias van den Gheyn (1721-85), a composer, organist and carillonneur in Louvain, whose carillon compositions are now part of the repertory.
Mathias van den Gheyn (1721–1785) was a Flemish composer. He lived and worked in Leuven.
He is known first and foremost for his compositions for the carillon and the organ, though he wrote for the harpsichord as well. His eleven preludes (Preludio I-X and Preludio Coucou) are among the most frequently performed pieces on the carillon due to their musicality and technical virtuosity.
