Monnier, Mathilde (b Mulhouse, France, 1959). French choreographer and director. Studied with Viola Farber in France and with Cunningham in New York, where she began to choreograph. The success of Pour Antigone (1993), a retelling of the Greek tragedy inspired by African dance, led to her being invited to direct the Centre Chorégraphique National in Montpellier in 1994. Works include Nuit (1995), Stop, Stop, Stop (1997), Signe, Signes (2000), and Déroutes (2002). In 2001 she staged Natt and Rose for the Royal Swedish Ballet. Her work is often inspired by the idea of madness.
