Who2 Biography: Matt Long, Actor

  • Born: 18 May 1980
  • Birthplace: Winchester, Kentucky
  • Best Known As: Star of the TV series Jack and Bobby

Matt Long was a relative newcomer to Hollywood when he began starring in the television series Jack and Bobby in 2004. Long graduated from Western Kentucky University in 2002 before moving to New York to work in live theater, where he was eventually discovered and cast as blue-eyed jock Jack McCallister in Jack and Bobby. The show followed the lives of two teenaged brothers, with viewers aware that one of the boys will someday grow up to be the 51st president of the United States. The show was popular with critics but ran for only 14 episodes in 2004-05. In November of 2004, People magazine named Long one of the year's "sexiest men."

The title Jack and Bobby was, unofficially, inspired by the political brothers Jack and Bobby Kennedy... Born in 1980, Long was 24 years old when he began playing a high school student on Jack and Bobby.

Biography

Performer Matt Long emerged as a supporting actor in the mid- to late 2000s. He achieved his most significant break in his early twenties, as one of the titular leads on Thomas Schlamme's critically worshipped -- but audience-ignored -- coming-of-age series drama, Jack & Bobby (2004). That program -- which, despite its title and one of the plot elements, bore only the most tenuous connection to the Kennedy family -- observed the doings of two contemporary young brothers, amid the throes of an upbringing by their hip, pot-smoking single mother (Christine Lahti), and the overarching suggestion that one would go on to run for president in the 2040s. After it folded prematurely at the end of its first season, Long tackled supporting roles in such features as the romantic comedy Sydney White (playing the boyfriend of Amanda Bynes) and the Nicolas Cage superhero saga Ghost Rider (as a young Cage). ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide
