Matthews is a town in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina and a suburb of the city of Charlotte. The population was 22,127 at the 2000 census.
Geography
Matthews is located at 35°7′1″N 80°42′59″W / 35.11694°N 80.71639°W / 35.11694; -80.71639 (35.116851, -80.716409)[1][page needed].
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 14.2 square miles (36.8 km²), all of it land.
Demographics
As of the census[2][page needed] of 2000, there were 22,127 people, 7,837 households, and 6,144 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,557.1 people per square mile (601.2/km²). There were 8,138 housing units at an average density of 572.7/sq mi (221.1/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 90.25% White, 5.34% African American, 0.33% Native American, 2.36% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.78% from other races, and 0.92% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.50% of the population.
There were 7,837 households out of which 43.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 69.1% were married couples living together, 7.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 21.6% were non-families. 17.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.79 and the average family size was 3.19.
In the town the population was spread out with 29.3% under the age of 18, 6.1% from 18 to 24, 32.2% from 25 to 44, 23.3% from 45 to 64, and 9.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 94.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.5 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $67,034, and the median income for a family was $75,791 (these figures had risen to $80,635 and $87,901 respectively as of a 2007 estimate[3]). Males had a median income of $52,143 versus $32,288 for females. The per capita income for the town was $27,471. About 2.7% of families and 4.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 3.0% of those under age 18 and 7.9% of those age 65 or over.
Schools and Libraries
The citizens of Matthews, NC attend the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Elementary schools include Matthews Elementary,[4], Antioch Elementary, Crown Point Elementary, and Elizabeth Lane Elementary. Middle Schools include Crestdale Middle School. Religious schools nearby include Covenant Day School, Charlotte Christian School, Carmel Christian and Blessed Sacred Academy.
Matthews is served by a branch of the Public Library of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County.[5] The library is located on the first floor of the Matthews Town Hall.

Jordan Lloyd
Matthews is also the home of Jordan Lloyd, winner of the reality tv show Big Brother 11. Lloyd was announced the winner on September 15, 2009 during the live finale. She won by a vote of five to two over Natalie Martinez in the final. Lloyd received the votes of Jessie Godderz, Lydia Tavera, Jeff Schroeder, Michele Noonan, and America's Vote. She only lost the votes of Russell Kairouz and Kevin Campbell. She is the first female winner since Maggie Ausburn of season 6.
