Biography

Swiss flutist Matthias Ziegler has toured all over the world playing a variety of flutes that include alto flute, an electro-acoustically amplified contrabass flute, and his invention, the 'Matusi-Flute,' which incorporates a vibrating membrane. Principal flutist of the Zurich Chamber Orchestra, Ziegler has had flute concertos written for him by several composers including Switzerland's Daniel Schnyder and New York bassist, Mark Dresser. In addition to performing traditional repertoire for the flute, Ziegler is committed to music that crosses the boundaries between classical music and jazz. He has performed with percussionist Pierre Favre, toured with Andreas Vollenweider, and can be heard on Dresser's Tzadik release, Banquet. He is also a member of the "Collegium Novum Zurich," where he has worked with Mauricio Kagel, Heinz Holliger and George Crumb. Ziegler is a teacher at the Musikhochschule Winterthur Zurich, while concert tours have brought him to the U.S., Japan, Australia, South America and Israel. ~ Joslyn Layne, All Music Guide
