Mustard family
Cruciferae

Mat-thy'o-la. A genus containing 50 species of Old World annuals, perennials, or subshrubs, only 2 species commonly in cultivation.

Description
Leaves alternate, without marginal teeth, or way or cut into segments. Flowers in terminal racemes, with 4 long-clawed petals.

How to Grow
Easy to grow and quick to flower. Some of the most cold-resistant annuals, but cannot stand heat. Start seeds very early indoors so that plants will be at early flower-bud stage before transplanting. Or sow outdoors in very early spring in full sun. Sow thickly and do not thin plants; crowding will force them to bloom early. Where winters are mild, sow seeds in late summer for winter and spring bloom. These plants prefer cool weather.

Matthiola incana
Stock ; Brompton Stock ; Gillyflower . 1-2 ft. (30-75 cm) high. Flowers white, blue, purple, reddish, pink, or yellowish, fragrant, 1 in. (2.5 cm) wide, usually double. S. Europe. Cultivar 'Annua', Ten-Weeks Stock, is early flowering and disease-resistant. Biennial grown as a hardy annual.

Matthiola longipetala
Evening Stock . Low-growing, much branched, to 1 ft. (45 cm) high. Flowers ¾ in. (19 mm) wide, scattered, purple to white, very fragrant, opening in the evening. Eurasia. Usually planted in clumps. Hardy annual.
