Biography

French composer Maurice Ravel (1875-1937), along with Claude Debussy, was a prime exemplar of Impressionism, one of the most significant and influential musical movements of the 20th century. A meticulous craftsman and unsurpassed orchestrator, Ravel created music notable for its luminous and evocative use of tone color and for the clarity and elegance of its form. His best-known works include the ballet Daphnis et Chloé, the orchestral piece La Valse, the piano pieces Jeux d'eaux and Gaspard de la nuit, and the String Quartet. His Boléro is one of the most familiar and frequently performed orchestral compositions of the 20th century. ~ Stephen Eddins, Rovi
