Max

Bohemian family of artists. Anton Max (1734-1808) and his son Josef Franz Max (1765-1838) were both sculptors. Of the latter's three sons, Josef Calasanza Max (1804-55) and (1) Emanuel Max were sculptors, working for a time in partnership. Josef Calasanza Max's sons, (2) Gabriel Max and Heinrich Max (1847-1900), were both painters, and his daughter Caroline Max married the painter Gyula Benczur. Gabriel Max's elder son, Corneille Max (1875-1924), was a painter and etcher, and his younger son, Columbus Josef Max (b 1877) was a painter.
