The maximum volume of air that can be breathed voluntarily by an individual in 1 min; it is estimated from an extrapolation of the volume breathed in 15 s of rapid, deep breathing. Unlike maximum sustained ventilatory capacity. The MVV is largely independent of fitness and training.
