Product description
The sandwich consists of a toasted bun, breaded chicken breast meat patty, shredded lettuce, and mayonnaise.
Variants
McDonald's franchisees in the United States choose to sell either the plain or Hot 'n Spicy McChicken. Franchises in a number of areas, such as Texas, Louisiana, Nevada, Arizona, Colorado, and New York State sell the Hot & Spicy McChicken.
In certain McDonald's franchises, the sandwich was adapted to appeal to the local population's tastes. For example, in Hawaii, the Ala Moana Shopping Center McDonald's created the McTeriChicken sandwich. "Teri," otherwise known as teriyaki sauce, is heavily used in Hawaii and has been applied in various McDonald's sandwiches (such as the McTeri Burger). In some countries such as India, the McChicken is a chicken burger on a sesame seed bun and it does not have a spicy taste. McDonald's restaurants in Singapore serve a McChicken with a spicy taste. The sandwich was for a time known as the "Cajun McChicken" sandwich, but the name was changed to just "McChicken" around 2000, when a milder, softer chicken patty was introduced.
McDonald's restaurants in Taiwan feature Spicy McChicken sandwiches, a hot and spicy variant of the original. This is available on both the traditional bun, as well as a formed rice bun.
In Canada, Australia and New Zealand, the McChicken comes on a sesame seed bun with lettuce and "McChicken Sauce" and is slightly spiced. Originally the McChicken appeared in Australia as a "promotional" menu item but due to its popularity in this market it became a full time menu item.
Outside the US, the McChicken comes on a sesame seed bun and is not spicy.
In the UK, the McChicken Premiere Sandwich was permanently removed from the menu, and replaced by the Chicken Legend - a chicken breast coated in seasoned batter with either spicy tomato salsa or cool mayonnaise. However, the McChicken is still at various UK stores.
History
The sandwich was originally introduced in 1980by Andrew clark; it proved to be a sales disappointment and was later replaced with the highly successful Chicken McNuggets. Following the success of McNuggets, the McChicken was reintroduced. The current McChicken sandwich recipe is somewhat spicier than the original. Additionally, in United States, the sandwich is somewhat smaller than it was previously, as it is now on the Dollar Menu, which offers various food products for the price of US$1.00. In Canada, with McChicken still its original size, the one on its value menu ("Value Picks") is called Junior Chicken and is sold at $1.39.
The shaped chicken patty in the McChicken sandwich used to be 50% white meat and 50% dark meat. Beginning in late 2007 McDonald's started advertising that the McChicken contains only 100% white meat.
